Being unfamiliar with the Alps, being raised 1650 meters below Safiental, my first focus of my research during the Alps Art Academy was on understanding and experiencing the mountainous landscape and its context. Focussing on the (un)conscious effects of the geographical environment, walking and framing became my critical tool for experimentation with the mountainous landscape. With these psychogeographic experiments and intuitive impressions I explored the balance between the physicality as well as the beyond human proportion of the mountains.

This resulted in video’s, photo’s, drawings and mixed media. A selection of this was presented at Berghotel Alpenblick, Tenna – GPS: 46.746727, 9.339001 on Saturday Oct 3, 2020 during Art Biennale ART SAFIENTAL.

In this period I visited in between 30- 40 machiya’s, from cafe’s to private residences, from office spaces to social businesses. Some perfectly preserved, some redeveloped in modern ways. What I found out in this short period, in these two months, is that the people in and outside Kyoto are trying to save their cultural heritage in many different ways as best as they can. To give these people an extra boost in their amazing efforts to find new ways to save machiya’s I organized a co-creative workshop using design thinking to help each other to re-think the future of machiya’s.
