It takes a day

For the Kyoto Machiya AiR exhibition 2014 I’ve made a short video about the destruction of a kyo-machiya.

In Kyoto every day 2 machiya’s a day are being destroyed. As this happens scattered around Kyoto, you don’t really notice. This is a tragedy happening in plain sight. The video shows the destruction of a machiya next to Nijo Castle.

It takes a day from Isjah Koppejan on Vimeo.

The Google Street View picture underneath shows the situation before the machiya was torn down. You can see that the front of the machiya (the one with the sign that says ‘Smile’) was redeveloped but that the rest had still the original wooden structure and features. The video shows this as well. The StreetView picture is from April 2014, the video is from July 2014, 3 months later.

More of these examples are shown in the exhibition.
